Practical, research-based ideas for building friendship, handling conflict and rebuilding trust as a couple.
The Gottman Method is a research-based approach to couples counseling developed from decades of studying how relationships succeed and struggle. It focuses on building friendship and closeness, managing conflict constructively, and creating shared meaning.
Sessions are conversational and practical. We look at how the two of you talk when things go well and when they do not, and I teach specific skills you can try between sessions, such as softer ways to raise a concern and ways to repair after an argument.
Couples who feel stuck in the same arguments, who have drifted apart, or who want to strengthen a relationship that is already good. It can be used with couples at any stage, including those preparing for marriage.
In my work with couples I draw on research-based ideas from this approach, along with other methods suited to each couple.
When the same argument keeps coming back, or the two of you have started to feel like roommates, counseling gives you a calmer place to talk and new ways to reconnect. I have helped couples do that for more than 35 years.
Support for the decisions, emotions and changes that come with separation and divorce.
